Both wonderful epic stories of the battle between good and evil. But if I have to pick one, Star Wars is both serious and funny, both sexy and goofy -- Lucas plays on a broader range of emotions.
Don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore Star Wars (The original 3 anyway) but Lord of the Rings has to beat it for me. While I grew up watching Star Wars, I grew up reading LOTR, and I always wanted to be an elf-warrior more than a jedi knight (ok, I'm the biggest nerd in the room).
I don't agree with anyone who says either of them sucks.
Talking about the films, there's no contest. LotR already seems incredibly dated (particularly looking at SFX), and working as they were with a beloved series of books they were bound to get stuff wrong. You can argue about how much and to what extent they got it wrong, but they did get it wrong. I just re-watched the trilogy this past week, and by the end I was cringing at how badly they mangled the story. Star Wars began as the films, so there's no expectations other than the films to disappoint viewers.
Now, if we were talking about the books, there'd be no contest, either, but it would be the other way around.
Wow, I'm really suprised by your comment... When I first heard that they were making LOTR into a movie, I was kinda angry because there are so few movies that get translated well to the big screen. However, when I saw LOTR I was really suyprised and happy, I enjoyed the way it was adapted. And I can say that about a very few number of books to movie adaptations. I mean, the films could never be as good as the book, but yeah, I definitely enjoyed it.
how could i *not* pick it?? :)
No contest. Darth Vadar could kick Sauron's ass any day.
It's classic. Even the one made two years ago is classic.
