Jennifer Lawrences Responds to Passengers Criticism in Vogue Interview 

Passengers” might have boasted two of the biggest stars on the planet — Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt — but that doesn’t mean it was immune to criticism.

“Passengers” didn’t fare well with critics, who blasted the flawed plot. Pratt has previously admitted he was surprised by harsh reviews, and now in a recent interview with Vogue, Lawrence had a chance to reflect.

In the film, Lawrence and Pratt are among the 5,000 passengers in suspended animation on a ship taking a 120-year journey through space. Pratt’s character accidentally wakes up 90 years early, and endures a year alone before waking up Lawrence’s character.

Owen Gleiberman called the decision “a selfish and rather creepy act.” Though Lawrence said she’s proud of the film, which grossed over $300 million worldwide, she agreed with critics who said the movie should have started with her character waking up.

“I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t spot it,” she said. “I thought the script was beautiful —  it was this tainted, complicated love story. It definitely wasn’t a failure. I’m not embarrassed by it by any means. There was just stuff that I wished I’d looked into deeper before jumping on.”

Luckily, Lawrence has other projects on her radar, including an upcoming film with comedian Amy Schumer where the two play “dysfunctional twins.” “We’re meeting with directors,” Lawrence said, adding, “It’s sad. Then funny.”

But before that, she’s taking on the cryptic horror movie “Mother!,” directed by Darren Aronofsky. Though there has been little released about the film, which opens Sept. 15, Lawrence said she “had to go to a darker place than I’ve ever been in my life.”

During one scene, Lawrence said it got so intense she hyperventilated and dislocated a rib. “I ended up getting on oxygen,” she said. “I have oxygen tubes in my nostrils, and Darren’s like, ‘It was out of focus; we’ve got to do it again.’ And I was just like, ‘Go f— yourself.\'”

The “Mother!” crew knew how to keep Lawrence’s spirits up, and they assembled a “Kardashian tent” where she could unwind and immerse herself in the world of reality TV.

“It was a tent that had pictures of the Kardashians and ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ playing on a loop—and gumballs,” Lawrence said. “My happy place.”

oh! we have another actor expressing how hard it is to play dress up and make believe while getting paid millions of dollars. she better go to a nursing home for a few months to recover from the hardship. its a good thing she only pretends to do things rather than doing actual work like 99.999% of society.

Look, Sparky. Acting is real work. Do you really think the entire job is what you see on the screen? They work hard to get where they are. Besides, the movies they star in employ hundreds of workers, mostly blue-collar ones, and they bring a lot of business to the areas where the movies are made.

Movies are great for a lot of people who do “actual work”. That work wouldn’t exist without actors. And most actors aren’t rich, and those who are usually didn’t grow up rich. So if you need to resent people, you can find better people to resent.

Sooo sorry, Jenny, that you hyperventilated to the point of getting ribbed. Such a hard, hard life for a movie girl. I pity your discomfort, just as I do myself for sitting through this turkey.

I loved “Passenger” enough to watch it multiple times. I thought the plot and acting were superb! I loved the special effects and the design of equipment and the ship were great and cleverly designed! I think I’ll watch it again!!

I liked Passengers. I liked that the movie showed the audience a situation and then left it to the audience to unpack. It was refreshing compared to today’s more heavy-handed, preachy films where the intelligence of the audience is not respected. It was unusual and a good sci-fi film makes you think about the human condition, in this case about human relations.

That said, another scene where the process of reconciliation was better developed would have worked and would have smoothed it over with the critics. This is a case where the film was underwritten but the underlying story could be fleshed out by the audience. Still better exposition would have made it a better film.

I’m a fan of “Passengers.” Yes, you could have structured it beginning with Jennifer’s character waking up, but I think it works fine the way it is. In the film you’re faced with Chris’ character’s dilemma of living the rest of your life alone. What would you do? Would you accept your fate or give in to the temptation of waking another passenger? If you start with Jennifer waking, you don’t experience the agony of that decision, and the film would be less of an emotional journey for the characters and the audience.

Amy Schumer is force fed to the American population. Please no more.

Actually, no. You’re not required to like her or, indeed, to have any opinion of her whatsoever. You don’t even have to acknowledge she exists.

I sorta agree with Lieberman. It was kinda creepy, but beyond that, it just wasn’t a very good movie. She’s very talented, but you wouldn’t know it from this. He’s one of the most likable and appealing actors working today. He is not a great thespian by any any means, but he does have charisma and nearly always gives a honest & believable screen presence, but not in this. It’s the weakest performance I’ve ever seen him give. He’s not a drama heavy actor and need some sort of comedic writing in all of his scripts and this had little which brought out his weaknesses as an actor. I was looking forward to a sci-fi movie with two of the hottest actors, for a variety of reasons, working today. I was greatly disappointed in this glossy, plastic unrealistic film.

Why hasn’t Jennifer Lawrence replied to the accusations of her dating Chris Pratt. Her silence says it all. If it is not true she should come out and tell the public.

Why should Lawrence dignify haters’ totally baseless Twitter speculation with a response? And who are you to a) jump to such an irrational conclusion, and b) demand a response?

Silly controversy. Sony should have fought back against a totally screwy reading of the storyline. A better ad campaign would have helped, too. Had no idea what the movie was about based on the ads.

The critique itself isn’t relevant. The movie is just flawed overall, shaky structure and boring through large parts. Without the street power it would have bombed for sure. The script and director are just not that great.

What the heck is this about? Why would it matter, plot wise, if the female woke up first? To begin with, she had no engineering background; she was simply a writer. In a real life situation, she wouldn’t have been able to figure out HOW to wake up Pratt’s character! So, what is the point of even thinking about this?

The criticism is not that her character should have replaced his. The argument is that the movie would have been better had we experienced the story starting from when she woke up, with the audience not yet knowing the circumstances of her awakening.

I believe they weren’t suggesting that her and Pratt’s characters would’ve switched wake-up order, but rather the movie would begin when she wakes up and finds Pratt has already been awake for a year. That way it would’ve been a shock for the audience as well as the character when it’s “discovered” that Pratt intentionally woke her up, making much greater tension for the character and the audience. There’s no suspense for the viewer if we saw Pratt wake her up already. I’ve heard multiple people suggest that version would’ve been better, and I have to agree.

Yes, and Coke is better than Pepsi. But I’m not sure what one has to do with the other. Is your life so boring & sad that you have to come to movie sites just to criticize people you don’t like in comment sections that have nothing to do with that person? You should get out more.
