"SENSE AND SENSIBILITY" (1981) Review

Jane Austen's 1811 novel, "Sense and Sensibility" has been a お気に入り with her modern-day fans. The novel has produced at least three テレビ and two movie adaptations and a literary parody. However, this review is about the seven-part, 1981 BBC adaptation.

Directed によって Rodney Bennett and adapted によって Alexander Baron and Denis Constanduros, "SENSE AND SENSIBILITY" starred Irene Richards and Tracey Childs as the two main protagonists - sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. The story focused on the sisters' attempts to find happiness in the tightly structured...

"PERSUASION" (1995) Review

Twenty-four years after the BBC aired its 1971 version of Jane Austen’s 1818 novel, ”Persuasion”; and twelve years before ITV aired its adaptation; Columbia Pictures released its own version on British テレビ and in movie theaters across the U.S. The movie went on to become highly acclaimed, the winner of a BAFTA TV award for Best Single Drama, and regarded as the definitive version of Austen’s novel.

Directed によって Roger Michell, ”PERSUASION” told the story of Anne Elliot, the middle daughter of an impoverished baronet in Regency England. Seven または eight...

"NORTHANGER ABBEY" (1986) Review

Most movie and テレビ adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels are either highly acclaimed または perhaps even liked によって ファン and critics alike. I can only think of two または three adaptations that have been dismissed them. And one of them happened to be the 1986 A&E Network/BBC adaptation of Austen’s 1817 novel, "Northanger Abbey".

Adapted によって Maggie Wadey, "NORTHANGER ABBEY" follows the experiences of seventeen-year-old ゴシック novel aficionado, Catherine Morland, who is invited によって her parents’ friends, Mr. and Mrs. Allen, to accompany them on a visit to Bath,...

"MANSFIELD PARK" (1983) Review

Long before Patricia Rozema wrote and directed her 1999 adaptation of "Mansfield Park", Jane Austen’s 1814 novel, the BBC aired its own adaptation some sixteen years earlier. This one came in the form of a six-part miniseries and is regarded によって many Austen ファン as the definitive screen version of the novel.

"MANSFIELD PARK" told the story of Fanny Price, the oldest daughter of a former Royal Navy officer, who is sent によって her parents to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle-in-law, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, at their estate called Mansfield Park, during the early...

"EMMA" (2020) Review

Between 2009 and 2020, Hollywood and the British film/television industries have created a handful of productions that either spoofed または were inspired によって Jane Austen's novels. Actually, I can only recall one movie that was もっと見る または less a straightforward adaptation - 2016's "LOVE & FRIENDSHIP", an adaptation of Austen's novella, "Lady Susan". So imagine my surprise when I learned a new and straightforward adaptation of an Austen novel was due to hit the theaters.

I was even もっと見る thrilled that this new movie would be a straightforward adaptation of Austen's 1815 novel,...

"PRIDE AND PREJUDICE" (1980) Review

As many ファン of Jane Austen must know, there have been several screen and テレビ adaptations of the author’s most celebrated novel, "Pride and Prejudice", published in 1813. I usually come across at least five of those versions – including the six-part BBC adaptation that aired in the U.S. in 1980. The miniseries was adapted によって Fay Weldon and directed によって Cyril Coke.

Only someone unfamiliar with Austen’s story would not know that "PRIDE AND PREJUDICE" told the story of Elizabeth Bennet, the second-born daughter of an English gentleman and landowner...

"EMMA" (1972) Review

I am aware of at least four adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel, "Emma". But I have noticed that the one adaptation that rarely attracts the attention of the novelist's ファン is the 1972 BBC miniseries, "EMMA".

Directed によって John Glenister and adapted によって Denis Constanduros, "EMMA" told the story of the precocious younger daughter of a wealthy landowner that resides near the village of Highbury. Emma Woodhouse imagines herself to be naturally gifted matchmaker, following her self-declared success in arranging a 愛 match between her governess and Mr. Weston, a village widower....
