They are both dark in their own ways.

People burned so many HP books because of "witchcraft" and "devil's work." I had a neighbor (a huge Bible thumper along with her family) who wasn't allowed to watch or read HP because it was full of "demons and hell stuff." Yeah, they actually said that. *facepalm*

But people also were against Twilight. My brother had to go to church with my grandparents, and he said that the preacher was telling everyone not to read Twilight because of the vampires in it, and that they were "Satan." I know someone's going to say "Twilight is horrible so I agree with the preacher!" That's not the point.

^ Well, religion does affect people, even the books they read. Even though our country is predominantly Catholic and I'm also a Catholic, our national congregation of the clergy here in the Philippines is not that strict and I haven't seen anything like the church criticizing both books in our local news. Anyways, I do not find Harry Potter books and Twilight books heretic (Well, for once I sided with Twilight saga) :D

^ Neither do I. I wish people who haven't read the books because of what their preacher says or whatever could just read the books and see that they aren't horrible like everyone says.

I don't think either of the books are dark in a religious sense, but Harry Potter definitely is quite dark when it gets to Voldemort returning, random murders, war, danger, battles, angst, etc. Twilight was pretty much sunshine, rainbows and sparkles (literally) 60% of the time. You can't really call them "dark."

^ How are they both not dark in a religious sense? Harry Potter deals with magic and witchcraft, which most religions are strictly against. Watch the movie Jesus Camp. They told them how horrible HP was and that it was wrong to read it. Twilight has vampires in it, which most religions are also not tolerant of. Like I said in most post above, the preacher was telling people not to read Twilight because of the "evil vampires."

VampiresRevenge, okay, I see what you mean, but the Meyerpires aren't like the traditional anti-christ the churches hate, and the Rowling-wizards don't practice Wicca, the neo-pagan witchcraft banned by Christianity. I think religious groups often ban them on merits which the series do not possess. Why would they? Meyer and Rowling are both women of faith and their heroes fight against the evil their books are often criticised for promoting. I guess if you look at it from a certain point of view, they're dark in a religious sense, but not really.

^ Most of them just judge the books by their covers. They don't want to read them. They just see that they have vampires, wizards, zombies, etc. in them, and don't want anything to do with it nor do they want the people that they are involved with to read it. I agree that both series fight against the evil subjects, and that's why they need to read them and not just jump to conclusions.

in twilight nothing exciting happens in harry potter every page there's something exciting also in the first twilight book the climax was pretty much a big rip off from the climax in OOTP

Actually in Hindu mythology there is a lot of witchcraft, goddesses bringing people back to life, etc.

^ Yeah. I was mostly focusing on Christians, though since those are the ones that I've had the most experience with. No offense to any at all, I was just giving some examples of friends and such that get offended because of their religion by HP and vampires.

Can I just say something? Me and my stepdad are both Christians and read HP, and alot of my Christian friends read HP too. It isn't seen so much as witchcraft but as magic doing good - like Gandalf from LOTR.

I just wanted to say that not all Christians believe that HP should be burnt, I believe JKR touched the topic of good and evil in an effective and realistic way (well, as real as magic can get!), she spreads a good message.

And how dark can a book (Twilight) get if no-one good dies? Just saying.

^ Yeah, I don't think that all Christians are like that, I just meant that all of the people I've seen who've said that it's "evil" or whatever were Christian or religious. I like that religious people, like you, can read it without thinking it's bad, though. :) Because it isn't, like you said.

The reason I think people think that Twilight is dark is because there are simply vampires in it.

In Slovenia more than half of population is Catholics and I`ve never heard of it before.

Um, yeah, not even going into the religious side of things, people actually died in Harry Potter. Lots of people, in lots of ways, for lots of reasons. People were tortured and injured and manipulated and possessed and oppressed. Good guys, bad guys, all ages, all genders, all races.

In Twilight the bad guys died :/ I think it's a pretty clear win.

Lots of people in my Catholic school love Twilight. The people who don't, love Harry Potter. Then there are the few that don't give a shit.
