Spoilers for both HBO\' Game of Thrones TV series (what\'s aired so far that is) and for all of George R. R. Martin\'s A Song of Ice and Fire novels follow...
Not that HBO\'s Game of Thrones hasn\'t deviated from the original George R. R. Martin books, but from a book-to-show adaptation standpoint, knowing what can happen in situations like these, the show\'s actually been surprisingly faithful. More or less. Almost every big moment has remained intact, as creators/producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff don\'t feel the burning desire to fix something that ain\'t broke.
Game of Thrones: Best Changes from the Books
But now, as we edge closer to Season 5, news has come in that the show will begin to deviate from the books more than ever. Not only do Martin\'s A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons overlap in time at points, but entirely new characters and storylines are introduced. Ones that remain, for he most part, separate from everyone else we\'ve met and followed thus far. So those new arcs are getting scrapped and existing characters are being moved around to fill and gaps left behind.
Game of Thrones Cast On How The Show Will Spoil The Books
We previously wrote up (and recently updated) a piece detailing all the changes from the books that we liked. All the ones that actually worked to make the show, and the story, better. Now it\'s time to take a hard look at some of the (mostly understandable) omissions that made us cringe. That ones that book readers couldn\'t wait to see unfold on TV but then never came to light. Here are the book-to-TV changes that hurt the most.
Okay, so we\'ll start off with the biggest one. The big kahuna of book leftovers. The shocking reveal of an undead Catelyn Stark, who (off page/off screen) had been whisked away from the pile of carnage that was the Red Wedding and reanimated by Thoros of Myr and his trusty Lord of Light powers. Unable to speak (thanks to how she died) and obsessed with dishing out violent revenge to anyone having
ties to her and Robb\'s death, Lady Stoneheart\'s hair and skin had both gone white. She now roamed the country side in full vigilante mode.
She\'s mostly just been a cool after-story. But it sure seemed like, from how ADWD left off, that someone was
to go down. Basically, when something like this gets left off the show, it makes the readers assume (since Weiss and Benioff know where most everything\'s headed) that nothing big or important will come of it.
Also, the twist of the knife here is that just about everyone predicted that this would be the beat Season 4 ended on. Boom. Lady Stoneheart. And while the season finale had a ton of great stuff - like Stannis saving the day beyond the Wall, Tyrion killing Tywyn - she was the big jaw-dropper folks were waiting for.
Important to the overall story or not, the idea of Lady Stoneheart is satisfying. I mean, how often to any of the good guys get a chance to avenge anyone\'s death, much less their own? Plus, it\'s been the only follow-up/payoff for Thoros\' abilities so far.
So far, the GoT producers have remained coy on whether Lady Stoneheart could still appear at a later point, so she\'ll no doubt remain a hoped-for element until we get a definitive answer.
Like Lady Stoneheart, Coldhands was just a dark, mysterious supernatural badass in concept, mission, and form. Smelling of dead meat and rot, and dressed in Night\'s Watch garb (with a scarf covering his face), Coldhands could\'ve debuted in Season 3, after the Craster\'s Keep mutiny, to help lead Sam back to the Wall. But he didn\'t. So many assumed he was being saved and shuffled around for Season 4.
But ol\' Coldilocks wasn\'t there either. And many were let down. Especially since so many fans were expecting a big reveal about him regarding his identity (the lost Benjen Stark was the most popular theory). A reveal that we\'re still waiting for in the books, by the way. Not that the books still can\'t still do something awesome with him, but leaving him out of the TV show gives the impression that basically, like Stoneheart, nothing
