Please people, quit saying that the House of Slytherin is a hotbed for evil ! No, it is not. A few members going astray don't mean all the members are evil. Look at Slughorn または Severus. (I sound like venting out but that's because I'm a Slytherin myself and not evil !)
As to dear Dolores Umbridge... Very good 質問 actually. I would be tempted she had been sorted into Slytherin. She claimed to have a family relationship with the Selwyn family (apparently a Slytherin family, but yet, nothing is 発言しました about that point and her claim is somewhat dubious, as it is to justify a jewel she practically stole).
She may have been sorted into Hufflepuff (her loyalty to Fudge, to the MoM, and to herself is very powerful). She could have been sent to Ravenclaw as she's clever and a hardworking person too to achieve her goals. She could have been sent to Gryffindor because she doesn't hesitate to stand her ground in front of people, once again to achieve her goals. She has much もっと見る courage in my opinion than Wormtail, for example. She could have been sent to Slytherin because she's cunning and ambitious.
Maybe JKR just did not mention anything as to her blood status and Hogwarts house - probably to just 表示する how hypocritical she can be (blood status) and that anyone can go astray one 日 または the other (house).
haha, hufflepuff. she's compensating for something.

Okay, so here I am one 月 later and I'm like hey, I should answer this question. Guess what? I was about to write this same damn answer that あなた see above. I'm magical, または something.
Personally, I dislike the stereotype that all Slytherins are evil and all Gryffindors are good. I think Dolores Umbridge would've been in Ravenclaw. Unfortunately I can't give a witty または clever reason as to why, that's just the impression I got in the books.

Yeah, the worst thing about the 本 is goody-goody-two-shoes Griffindors vs. evil, mean, Sytherins
Without mentioning Wormtail... never understood how he could have been sent to Gryffindor. Yet, I suspect the Sorting Hat to be prescient : it knew about the prophecy, and the prophecy required someone to betray the parents of the Boy-Who-Lived. Wormtail has just been an instrument, that's all.
^ Yup. My guess was always that he wanted to be in Gryffindor - after all, the Hat takes your choice into consideration - maybe even begged to be in Gryffindor, to be like James and Sirius and the others. But your guess is really, really good.
@Poseidon3: No, he really didn't. He continued to bully and hex Severus behind Lily's back until they left Hogwarts. His behavior, as pointed out によって several characters, proves he nevr really "matured". Lily was just blinded. Pity, really.
@BlackHound; i don't know how あなた read the 本 (the meaning how あなた understood them) but for me it seemed like James were matured! there are many different way to be that! but the fact that he loved Lily and Harry so much that he was willing to threw he's life away because of them, that he was willing to die because of them, does in my head say that he was mature! but as i 発言しました there are different types of mature and i think that the bullied thing he had never grew of him, it doesn't mean that he's immature, it was just who he was. it's no offence to you, because it's your opinion and i respect it, i just wanted to write mine too, since あなた know it's my opinion xD.
No one knows in the books, または the movies. But it hints that she was most likely in Slythrin in Book and Movie 5. She is totally power hungry Also there is a change she did not go to Hogwarts but another school

Slytherins are ambitious, not necessarily power-hungry.
According to Harry Potter Wiki, her House is unknown. It's NOT Slytherin; Severus Snape was the first Slytherin Headmaster since Phineas Nigellus Black. I agree with the Hufflepuff suggestion; as has been stated elsewhere, her wand is unusually short, and あなた know what they say about *men* with "short wands". ;)

Ah, you're right, that's a really good indication - thanks for pointing this out. lol about the wands... in Umbridge's case, her wand is inversely proportional to her girth. Yes, I think she could be a Hufflepuff. It shows that this House, between Cedric and ニンファドーラ・トンクス and Umbridge, can have members with nerves and determination.
Well, as stated によって the Sorting Hat in Book 5, basically, Salazar Slytherin claimed only the Pureblood, Godric Gryffendor only the brave, Rowena Ravenclaw only the smart, and Helga Hufflepuff gladly claimed "the rest, and treat them all the same".
I don't even know if she really went to Hogwarts...But my guess is Slytherin. She's obsessed with blood purity, she loved the Slytherins when she was headmaster. But, maybe she always had a desire to be in Slytherin but couldn't? Maybe she was a Hufflepuff...

Wait, nevermind, she couldn't be a Slytherin...I just read BlackHound's answer :D I think she's a Hufflepuff.
@ScarlettSeverus - the only example I can remember of a Slytherin not being anti-Muggle-born is Severus with Lily - and that was because they had a pre-existing friendship and he loved her.
I'd say Slytherin, but not "because she's evil" - it isn't that simple. She does 表示する a lot of ambition and being willing to do anything to achieve her aims though. This is the main characteristic of Slytherin house. When she first appears, she seems really loyal to ファッジ and follows his orders and beliefs. That would have helped her political career at the time. によって the time of the seventh book, she's highly anti-Muggle-born, which was a trait which had never appeared in her before. If she'd always felt that way, you'd have thought she'd have mentioned it in criticising a student like Hermione, または asked the teachers their blood status when inspecting them. Again, a viewpoint which would have been politically in at the time of the seventh book.
