Jessikaroo picked Yes! He doesn't understand.:
I choose this because you gave me no option for a middle ground. Yes, Ariel is immature and thinks she knows everything. Yes, her father is overprotective and on rare occasions cruel. But Ariel's not a brat because she doesn't know everything, and happened to be a fan girl of the wrong thing. Triton is not too hard because he knows the danger humans presents, and if we follow the sequels he lost his wife to humans so he has reason to hate them. There's fault on both sides with these two. They're not black and white.

Same reason with Jessikaroo, but he overreacts to things. Like the Destruction of the Grotto, and he felt remorse about the whole thing later on.

Oh gosh I'm sorry, I forgot to put a "Kind of" option!
But I agree with you.

Parents need to be strict. I didn't think he was that hard on her. Just when he destroyed Ariel's collection, that was way harsh.

He just won't even listen to what she had to say, but sometimes Ariel was a little pushy so a bit of both

from my personal experiences with my father, i can easily say that Triton is just worried about Ariel. at least he doesn't call her stupid, useless and a bitch.
i rest my case

correct. Triton's not perfect, and destroying her collection was overboard, but he's not terrible

apart from destroying her collection, that was a stretch too far, he's just acting like a parent

She's not a brat, though.
But he is not to hard on her (usually.) Ariel's obsession was getting out of hand. She missed a major family event because she was out looking for human trinkets, and basically abandoned everything that had to do with her life as a mermaid. All he knew about humans was that they ate fish and were dangerous to sea life. He was trying to protect his daughter.

^ Ariel was not obligated to be present on a celebration she didn't want to attend, because despite the popular belief children owe their parents nothing. Was it irresponsible of hers? Absolutely. Was it understandable that a 16 year old girl would prefer to spend time with her friend doing things she enjoyed to do instead of attending a pompous celebration and singing in public (which a loit of teens would find humiliating)? Definitely. It's 50/50 I suppose.

It's a tricky subject because both Ariel and Triton were in the wrong. Triton possessed little to no knowledge on the human world and culture and already prefered to label it as horrible and barbaric based on one tragic accident with his wife. Which was terrible, granted, and as a person, I completely understand his feelings and pain, but as a King he should have known where to draw the line between baseless prejudices and awareness/overprotection. Contrary to him, Ariel put an actual effort into getting to know the human world to the best of her ability and using every opportunity she had in her situation and to punish her for her natural curiosity and unwillingess to generalize, discriminate and repeat Triton's negative judgement and prejudices by destroying everything she had been working on for years of her life while she screamed and begged him to stop was definitely not a way to go about it. Triton had a point, Ariel had a point, it's really hard to judge either because their feelings were understandable.

But I would have voted for an option closer to middle ground if it was present. But I don't think that Triton was overly hard on Ariel, he cared about her so much and the only thing he did that was a bit much was to destroy Ariel's collection.

@maryksand: Don't forget the ceremony WAS in Ariel's honor. So not attending showed selfishness and lack of respect for the people, who went there to see your debut.

Yeah, it was "marketed" to supposedly be in Ariel's honor, yet started with a virtuous praising of how great Triton is. Also, did you miss the part where I said that Ariel missing the ceremony WAS irresponsible? But it doesn't make her a brat.
