The Pros and Cons of Being in an Imaginary Relationship with a Disney Character

Fulfilling, profound relationships are some of life’s greatest joys. But for the times when you aren’t in of those, pretending to be in an imaginary relationship with a Disney character works too! As with all things, there are benefits and pitfalls to dating someone who is decidedly nonexistent. We shall extrapolate on these as follows:

Got a spare “plus one” lying around for the wedding of your high school arch nemesis whose respect you desperately crave? When you RSVP with an imaginary Disney character as your date, you’re really facilitating your own ability to eat TWO plates of food, AND have an empty chair next to you to use as a footrest during the toasts.

People will often try to tell you that your girl/boyfriend “doesn’t exist” and that you are “scaring the children” and “must be stopped.” Don’t listen. They’re jealous. Haters make you famous.

PRO: Potential arguments or zany mixups are resolved within an hour and a half.

How? Well, that’s how long the movie is, and you know it has a happy ending!

This is guaranteed to be awkward, either because your significant other’s family has deeply-entrenched misgivings about humans, or because your own parents never thought you’d end up with a fictional animated character. Just give everyone time. They’ll come around.

What’s more fun than singing both parts of “A Whole New World” alone in your shower and running out of breath somewhere around the “Don’t you dare close your eyes” part? Seriously, name ONE thing.

You might not understand the strict societal expectations your beloved faces. Your significant other might not understand what it’s like to occupy a three-dimensional space. You listen, you learn, they crash into a few walls at first—everyone adjusts. Love is a compromise.

PRO: You’ll probably get a sweet soundtrack to your love story.

Falling in love is a pretty good time, but falling in love within the context of a romantic montage narrated in song by your dearest friends/strongest supporters is legendary. With Disney characters, the latter is all but guaranteed.

CON: If you don’t like the one outfit they always wear, you’re probably out of luck.

There’s a chance that your Disney character boy/girlfriend has spent a significant majority of their life (or at least the ninety minutes of it you’ve seen) rocking one signature outfit. You don’t want to be the person who jumps into the picture and immediately starts attempting to change something so inherent to your loved one’s being. Grit your teeth and cross your fingers for a possible sequel replete with costume changes.

Oh, you two. You’re that couple whose every move is so in sync, every line so well-timed, it’s almost like the two of you are… scripted. People love to bear witness to this. You’re going to be the life of every party.
