I could argue that Xander cared too much for Buffy romantically to be a really good best friend. The example that comes to mind is how he didn't tell Buffy Willow's message about possibly changing Angel's soul...how he said instead "Kick his ass" or something else equally non-Willow's-message.
i think his saying that was trying to protect buffy, in his own way...sure, it was wrong, but then so was willow trying to kill buffy in the end of season 6 :) haha, they are both GREAT friends, but i just have always felt that xander's friendship was the best thing he had to offer to the whole group. it was his 'super power' thing...
I love Willow in the beginning of the series. She was a kiddy, cute girl. With a spirit of a kid. But later on...it just gets...so self-absorbed. But she still rocks.
Xander. I hated him in the beginning of the series! He hated Angel so much! But when he matures, he gets funnier and cooler. I think it was because of Anya. Hehe.
Xander lets his own emotions cloud his decisions when it comes to Buffy. When he didnt tell Buffy that Will was curing Angel? Who could do that to a friend? Plus, i think it's easier to be best friends with a girl, there's no awkward stuff like talking about periods.
aww, i feel sorry for Zander, but i picked Willow. It's mainly because she's a girl, and i think she can share more with buffy e.g. talking about boys (but then she turned into a lesbien and STILL talked about boys for Buffy!)
I think they both are her best friends, the're there for her in different ways. At the start i would say Willow was more her best friend because Xander liked buffy in a girlfriend way more than a best friend but as time went on I think Xander for me became more of her best friend, hes always there for her giving advice and hes like her big brother. There friendship is so sweet.
xander because though he does not have any power, he remained fighting alongside buffy.. and plus the fact that willow turned on buffy when she became powerful in season 6
I chose Willow for the simple fact she is female. She was geeky and funny with all those smarts. It'd be impossible to hate her (unless she almost kills your younger sister). Xander is the counterpart to her and I find nothing wrong with him. It's not even right to make them versus because they are counterparts. One would not exist without the other.
There were a lot of things Buffy couldn't share with Xander because she knew he would be all judgmental about it. I think Willow was much more loyal and a lot less preachy and hypocritical.
willow was always more supportive of buffy. although i guess you could argue that xander was just looking out for her. but i agree with cressida in that xander saw buffy too romantically.
don't get me wrong, i love xander, and he's one of my favorite charaters, but i think willow was more of a best friend to buffy.
I love Xander, but he was always a little judgemental of Buffy. Willow was with her through alot of stuff, despite the whole trying to kill her thing :P
this was a little hared cause they are both really good friends to buffy. and buffy loves them both but sometimes willow is there more and sometimes xander. i love them both it was a really tricky question for me.
A lot of people keep commenting on how Willow turned on Buffy in season six. But, there's a reason. Her girlfriend just died and she wanted revenge and Buffy wouldn't let her. Think about yourselves, think about if someone just shot the person you loved most in the world and think about if your BFF didn't want you to have revenge. Would you listen and back off? Not if you loved that person as much as Willow loved Tara.
yes yes of course willow gets this title out of default i must say. Xander was IN love with buffy there for beyond a friend, he would die for her, not that willow would but this love is way beyond a bff. I was a hard choice
Willow is great I love hr chara and the friendship between her ans buffy. But Xander was always there for Buffy and defends her even when everyone else leaves her.... he is a great friend!!
I love Willow, she's one of my favourite characters EVER, but in terms of being best best friends with Buffy, I think Xander has always been there for her. Willow, once she was with Tara, kind of... I don't know... not really *forgot* Buffy but wasn't really there for her that much anymore.
How can you decide who is the better best friend? as they are both great friends to her, Willow is the better friend in the female form and Xander is the better friend in the male form, as they have their ways of been a better friend to her but i cant say, so i am not gonna vote on this one!

This was an extremely hard question! But I had to go with Willow! She was Buffy's gal pal and they went through so much together! Xander was extremely amazing too!
Yes, Xander did tell Buffy that Willow said to kick Angel's ass, even when she didn't, but no one is perfect. Judgment is going to get cloudy and will get in the way on occasion. Obviously, Willow totally went against Buffy when she was addicted to magicks. At that point, she was "sick" and out of control. I think both Xander and Willow are true blue friends of Buffy, but I'm going with Xander. He never hesitated to fight by her side with no type of "super-human" power whatsoever, and dealt well with not letting his romantic interest in Buffy get in the way of being a loyal friend.
I think Xander judged Buffy's every action far too much to be her best friend, his romantic feelings towards her always gave his actions a hidden depth.
Hands down Xander. He may have loved her romantically at one point, but he stuck by her through everything. Granted, so did Willow, but Xander was right on board all the time, seeing the big picture for everything. He may have said to kill Angel instead of Willow's message, but say the spell didn't work and Angelus never reverted. The world would have ended, if it wasn't for Xander. I am probably the only one who forgave Xander for leaving Anya at the altar, but again: He saw the big picture and didn't want Anya or himself to suffer. He ended it sooner rather than later.
They are both her best friends but I think Willow is more of her best friend. Willow is always there for her and doesn't start looking down on her if Buffy has done something wrong. Willow just stands up for her.

When Buffy was upset willow would be the first to notice and try to find out whats wring and I like that about her always caring and ready to listen but xander has a good heart but isn't always the right person to understand Buffys feelings at time like buffy and angel... And that.
They are both great friends but I think Willow even more, plus she's a girl and many things she understands better than Xander. Things that Buffy even cant talk about with Xander.
I do love Willow to! still, I feel as though Xander was there for her. Willow made a lot of mistakes during the show that caused me to get very angry with her. After season six, it was hard for me to really start liking her again. Xander was always there to give his inspirational speeches and in my opinion he was better friend to have around.
I cannot agree more there, cressida. From my perspective, Willow makes a great friend for Buffy. Xander really irked me when he was dishonest with Buffy about what Willow had said in her message to Buffy. After all, it is my honest opinion that a friend that is honest and yet nice about it is a good friend to have. Of course, a friendship cannot be built on dishonesty; it takes good qualities like compassion, honesty and loyalty to build up a friendship and make it grow stronger through the storms and fights of life, no matter how many there are in this life.
I would look at the friendship between DJ Tanner and Kimmy Gibbler from the TV show Full House. Their friendship has had its ups and downs, but they managed to work things out with each other and also apologize to each other if either one of them did something wrong, too. Now that's a strong friendship right there if there ever was one. :)
Both have had their weak friendship points. Willow in season 6 has her addiction to magic and later her reaction to Tara's death, and Xander had the whole jealousy and bias over Angel, specifically lying over Willow's message but also things like the confrontation in Revelations.
I think Willow's reasons/excuses were better though.
