I think this look- as I have always thought- depicts Merlin thinking about the future. Take what he had just 発言しました to Arthur about taking up leadership and becoming king. It's a thought and a very clear thought of the future. Uther is a broken man and Merlin's mind- as he is always concerned about the future- has gone into thinking about that when he tells Arthur this. Arthur responds, "Who knows what the future will bring." Immediately afterwards, the knights come riding in- Gwen leading them on a white horse. Most of these knights are commoners- people who could never have been knighted before. Arthur obviously has gotten up at this point and his helping Guinevere off her horse. They キッス and Merlin watches on. He sees these knights- people whom Arthur would have never knighted before and is reminded how much he and Arthur have grown up. How much their destiny has developed and how he can finally see why his destiny is linked with such a man as this. He sees Gwen and Arthur and sees the Once & Future King & クイーン shining through. He sees that this is a sign of the future- that Arthur has in fact already grown up and will be a great king. How he can take Gwen as his Queen. How these knights who have gone through hell- Lancelot particularly- have achieved their dreams. He is seeing a brilliant light ahead of the future and of his destiny that is finally shining through.

So there あなた have it. My personal opinion of Merlin's wistful look :)

Yes, it is もっと見る than sad actually, it is poignant. For a brief moment あなた look into his eyes and あなた see the wizard to be and he knows the uphill battle of what is to come. For that moment, he doesn't play the fool.

My guesses are as good as anyone's, but I'll give it a shot...

A) Merlin is looking at the knights, Gwen and Arthur and feels that he'll never be able to really be part of that group because he does have magic.

B) He is realizing that his job will never be as easy as the knights, Gwen または Arthur because it is his "duty" to keep Arthur alive.

C) He is contemplating what to go with Excalibur, which is the 次 scene.

D) He is thinking that he will never be able to 愛 someone the way Arthur/Gwen do. Because his true love, Freya, has passed away.

Those are my thoughts. A is most likely and D is least likely, in my mind.

I always feel a bit sad for Merlin during this scene, but here is what I think. I believe Merlin has always been the first Arwen fan. (In fact, he is currently presiding president of the worldwide Arwen club.) He's the one who heard that speech that Arthur made in 2x04. He's the one who went through the sorrow, hurt, fear, and hopelessness with one または both of them in 2x10, 3x06, 3x07, and 3x10. He was with the limping Arthur in 3x12 when he went to Gwen's house to find only Elyan there and had to drag the prince from going to find "Guinevere...my father" in the 城 when they got there. Merlin knew better than anybody in the world what these two meant to each other, and seeing them reunited after that horrible experience that they'd all been through, with the キッス right there for all to see, it had to touch him to the core. Actually, his look on the stairs reminds me of the one he had in the coronation scene of Morgana's dream.

And I must add that I think perhaps he also thought of Freya in that moment. Awwww.

Wonderful surmise about the presiding president of the Arwen club and most ntuitive about Freya. I think it is a combination of things myself, both joy and sadness.

I so agree with あなた HQ. But go back way further. I personally think Merlin picked up on Gwen's crush even before she knew it in 1x1. Remem ber the line "I thought あなた liked those rough tough save the world types" and then there was the biggest arwen foreshadowing of all when Merlin asked her who she'd choose in 1x5. I know I'm the only one but I've always thought writers were 表示中 Gwen's crush on Art from the very beginning.

No あなた are not the only one! They gave so many hints it's not even funny. I completely forgot about that line in 1x1. I even think the way Arthur acted in 1x3 when she was sentenced to death the first time was a foreshadowing. Surely he didn't understand why it made him so uncomfortable but it did. That's why I often say the way they approached it was genius and why I get so irritated when people say the romance was "out of the blue."People often bring up her statement "who would want to marry Arthur." We all know girls (and guys) will say things like because they don't want to admit true feelings, especially where a crush is involved.

Well done San819. Well done indeed. I forgot 'the rough, tough save the world types' comment. This also brings to mind the scene with Lancelot and Arthur where Merlin points to both and says, if あなた had to choose. Hmmm...foreshadowing indeed. Gotta 愛 Merlin, the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer of ARWEN
