We howled all night. 'I hope my dad isn't howling tonight, because if he finds me, I'm dead,' I thought. Finally, the howl ended and the オオカミ started leaving. I felt awkward. I couldn't tell Humphrey that he was amazing; it would give him the wrong idea. Maybe I did like him, but not enough to break the entire social anarchy of both the Western and Eastern packs.
Humphrey was staring at the moon and had a look on his face that made me feel bad that I couldn't tell him my feelings. He seemed to have other things on his mind. Suddenly, he changed his expression to a sly one and he cocked an eyebrow. He grinned and looked in my eyes. I sharply turned my head and looked away. I figured he knew how I felt, and was using it to his advantage.
He tried to look at my face, "What's wrong?" I guess he hadn't known, and I was happy about that. "Oh, nothing. I just hope my parents aren't out here so they did see that," I replied. I had just looked up and lied to his face, and I felt really guilty for it. "Alright. So.." he paused, "what did-"
"Calla!" my mother interrupted. I sighed in relief. "I'm sorry, Humphrey. I have to go, my mom's calling me. Um.. That was fun. Bye.." I 発言しました quickly and ran down Howling Rock. "Bye, Cal," Humphrey shouted from the ledge. As I replayed how he 発言しました that in my head, it sounded sly. Thinking about what that meant made me tense up.
Saying that I had fun might just be the worst mistake of my life. I ran behind a ブッシュ and looked up to where Humphrey was. He was grinning his butt off. I rolled my eyes and sighed. "Yup. Bad choice," I 発言しました aloud. I ran out from behind the ブッシュ and up to the den.
"You wanted me, Mom?" I called out. "Yes, Calla. How did your howl go? Did your howl match up with another wolf's? What Alpha was it?" she questioned. I scrambled for the 回答 to everything she asked. "It went well. My.. um.. howl didn't match up with another Alpha's," I nervously replied. "Oh. Sorry, dear. Maybe 次 year?" she 発言しました with a sympathetic look and walked away.
She didn't even think about asking whether または not it was an Omega instead of an Alpha. As I thought about that, I figured it was probably best if that's what I told myself; that only an Alpha's howl would match up with another Alpha. I shouldn't let myself like Humphrey. I wasn't even allowed to like him. So I wouldn't.
That night, neither my sister または I could sleep. Mom and Dad seemed to have no problems, though. Liz crawled toward me and lied down. "So," she whispered, "how'd your howl go?" I sighed. I could lie, but I knew I could trust her not to tell anyone. If I told her, there was no denying that a had a tiny crush on Humphrey. "I.. uh.. howled with a certain wolf," I whispered nervously. I heard Liz's tail swishing behind us. "Go on, what Alpha?" she prodded. "You too, huh?" I sighed.
"What are あなた talking about?"
"You think that because I'm an Alpha, and because its in the rules, that I howled with an Alpha. Just like Mom thought when she asked." Liz had a stunned look on her face, "Wait, so あなた didn't howl with an Alpha?" I shook my head, looking down. "What did あなた tell Mom?" she asked. "I told her that I hadn't howled with anyone," I replied, guilty that I had lied to two people today.
She shook her head, smiling. "What Omega did あなた howl with?" she asked, hinting that she knew it was an Omega, that she wasn't guessing. I took a deep breath in, about to tell her, when suddenly she jumped up and had an Ah-ha look on her face. "I knew it! It was an Omega!!" she whispered loudly. I looked away again. She grinned, bursting at the seams.
"IT WAS HUMPHREY!!!" she jumped around. "I knew あなた liked him, but not enough to howl with him! Ooh, if Vanessa knew about this-" I cut her off, "NO! Nobody can know, Liz!" Finally she calmed down, "Ok, fine." I laid my head on the floor. "Thank you. Now go to sleep," I muttered, already dozing off. "Okay," she said, still a little jumpy. "Goodni-" she started to say and fell asleep. I laughed quietly. "Night, Liz." Soon after, I was already sleeping.
